RocketR Is For Rocket

There’s something reassuring about guitars this loud leaving room for a tender voice. Los Angeles quartet Rocket make that contrast count on their debut album, with Alithea Tuttle’s melodies holding steady against the distortion. Wide Awake gets an extra shove from double-tracked drums, a lovely bit of excess beneath a vocal that seems to float clear of the commotion. The ’90s guitar-rock affection is easy to hear, but the small anxieties about love and being understood bring it close to home.
