Mike Kinsella and company managed to capture a very specific kind of Midwestern longing on this debut, one that feels just as potent decades later. The interlocking guitar lines between Steve Holmes and Kinsella create a fragile, mathy clockwork that somehow never feels cold. When the trumpet drifts in on For Sure, the scale of the music shifts from a suburban bedroom to something much more expansive. It remains a definitive document of clean tones and teenage transitions that finds its strength in what is left unsaid.
